Armpits 4 August: Discussion event @ LWP

Armpit4August will be running a discussion evening about female body hair and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) at LWP, on Thursday 19th July from 7-9pm. All self-identified women welcome.

The organisers from Armpits4August will be giving a short presentation about their campaign and their recent day of action in central London. Armpits4August are asking women to grow out their armpit hair this August to raise money for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) charities.

As the campaign aims not only to raise awareness of PCOS but also to create a safe space to discuss women’s complicated, emotional, or embarrassing experiences of body hair, the presentation will be followed by splitting up into small groups for a consciousness-raising (CR) session where these issues can be examined supportively. We will end by coming back together as a group to review the impact of the CR session and how this relates to the role(s) of women in society. Armpits4August is an event for all self-identified women and we hope to host a lively evening of discussion and debate which reflects feminism’s many intersections.

Want to visit Lambeth Women’s Project and see what it’s all about? We welcome visitors and want you to come and see why it’s such an important space that needs to be saved. Here’s a list of activities happening over the coming week:

  • Resource room open, 12-8pm (every Wednesday)
  • Brixton Women’s Institute craft session, 7-9pm

(The LWP benefit gig with Julia Biel and Rule of Regina is also taking place on Wednesday, at Full Stop on Brick Lane)

Thursday 12th July

  • Cooking and nutrition group, 12-8pm

Sunday 15th July

  • Kundalini yoga, 11am-12:30pm

Women are invited to come join workshops which will be held @166a stockwell road, as well as to organise and plan LWP’s resistance to the eviction threat.

Some updates from the Facebook page:

Friday: a group of LWP volunteers are going to be in the building all day – if you would like to join us please do. Nothing has been taken yet and the school creche is running as usual. We have taken legal advice and will update people through the day of what is happening. Thanks for your support so far.

Please note that tonight’s party at LWP for Jo Spence as part of the current exhibition at Studio Voltaire will go ahead as planned as of this morning. We will let people know straight away if this changes. More info about the event here.

Portrait workshop at LWP

There’s a ton of important stuff being done at LWP – from mentoring to domestic violence work, environmental issues to advocacy, creative workshops to counseling, to name just a few.
